Why Every Business Owner Needs a Guest Room—and a Moving Crew
My wife and I just moved to a new house. Moving just a few minutes down the road from Mason to Maineville, I figured this would be a relatively painless move. After all, it’s not like we were moving across the country. But as we discovered, even a short move can be just as chaotic as a long one—and this move represents a new chapter in life for us.
It’s a new chapter for us because it’s our first move as empty nesters. With our kids grown and pretty much just visitors at this point, we realized it was time to downsize—less space to maintain, less clutter, and a home that fits our needs now. But even as we packed up years of memories, we made sure to keep a guest room ready for visitors. It struck me how much this mirrors what business owners should consider: is your business right-sized for where you are today, but still flexible enough to accommodate growth or unexpected opportunities? Sometimes, holding onto “just in case” space—like that guest room—makes all the difference. But on the other hand, too much space means that your resources aren’t optimized, and you could be wasting money on things you don’t need.
Of course, downsizing always results in making tough choices about what to keep and what to let go. In business, it’s easy to hang onto old processes, products, or even clients that no longer fit your vision or goals. “It’s the way we’ve always done it” has been the downfall for many businesses. Streamlining and optimizing isn’t a negative – you’re just making room for what matters most; ensuring your business is agile enough to thrive in the here and now.
And let’s be honest: some parts of moving are just too heavy to handle alone. That’s where we brought in the big muscle by hiring a moving company for the pieces of our move that were beyond our capability. They tackled the heaviest furniture and awkward-sized things that would have left us sore for weeks. It reminded me of the value a coach or guide brings to your business. There are always challenges or “heavy lifts” that feel overwhelming or outside your wheelhouse. Sometimes, the smartest move is to call in help—someone with the tools, experience, and perspective to get you through the tough spots safely and efficiently.
There were plenty of other lessons, too. We relied on the kindness of strangers for free moving boxes from Facebook Marketplace, and our new neighbors welcomed us before we’d even unpacked. It was a reminder that resourcefulness and community are invaluable—whether you’re moving to a new house or building a business.
Here are a few takeaways I hope you’ll find useful:
Change is messy, even when it’s close to home. Small shifts in business can feel just as disruptive as big ones. Embrace the process and give yourself grace.
Right-size for your season, but leave room for growth. Streamline what you don’t need, but keep options open for new opportunities—just like keeping that guest room ready.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help with the heavy stuff. Whether it’s a moving crew or a business coach, investing in expert support can save you time, stress, and even money in the long run. It’s why we do what we do here at Mastering Profitability.
Focus on what matters. Let go of the clutter—physical or otherwise—that doesn’t serve your goals.
Lean on your community. Sometimes, a simple act of generosity or a new connection can make all the difference. Always be building your professional network.
Now that the dust is settling, I’m excited to get back to helping business owners and leaders thrive—armed with a few new lessons (and a better appreciation for labeling boxes). If you’re facing a transition, big or small, remember to embrace the chaos, lean on your community, and keep moving forward. Summer can be a slower business season for many business owners and leaders. It can be a great time to work on some of the bigger rocks in your business that you’ve been pushing out. If you need a hand with the “heavy stuff” in your business, you know where to find me.
Here’s to new beginnings—and to making sure your business (and your home) fits just right.
Be blessed. Do good stuff today!
